Vibe coding after the hype: when a prototype acquires responsibility
A working AI prototype is not a bad beginning. It becomes risky only when nobody decides under which rules it moves into a maintained product.
At 5:30 pm, the demo works. The new flow displays the right data, the button responds, and the colleague from the business side can recognise her idea. With Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or OpenAI Codex, a team has made something visible in hours that might previously have taken several rounds.
The next morning, the question changes. The same flow now has to live with real roles, partial data, a slow integration and a teammate who never saw the original chat. The prototype has not failed. Its status has changed. An exploration has become software that someone will need to understand and change.
Vibe coding is a working mode, not a production approval
The term is often used as either an accusation or a promise. Both miss the point. Vibe coding is good at making a possibility tangible: trying an interface, exposing a product question, sketching a data flow or testing a hypothesis against reality.
It becomes risky when a team mistakes that strength for approval. The fact that a path works does not tell us how it behaves with missing permissions, duplicate data, unusual input or a changed requirement. An early experiment often has no complete answer to those questions by design. That is fine while it is an experiment. In production it becomes an unowned debt.

Give the transition its own moment
The worst transition happens by accident: a prototype becomes popular, gains real users and stays in the same branch because “it already works”. A short, deliberate handover is better. Not as ceremony, but as a change of status.
In that conversation, answer five questions. What problem has the prototype genuinely validated? Who owns the code after the demo? What data and permissions does it touch? What needs an independent test: a happy path, a failure path, an unpleasant edge? And how do we get back if the idea does not hold up: a flag, a rollback or a clear removal route?
An unanswered question is not a rejection of the idea. It is evidence that the idea is still in exploration mode.
Replace the prompt with a work order
An agent can turn a broad idea into a surprising amount of working code. Production work needs different rails from the first sketch. State not only the visible goal, but also the change boundary: which files belong to the task, which dependencies are off limits, which tests must run, and which decision must not happen automatically.
That may sound less creative. In practice it protects creativity where it matters. The team can keep using the agent for tests, documentation, narrow repairs and clearly bounded UI work without letting every request quietly become an architecture decision.
What happens to speed
Moving into a governed process costs a little speed at first. There are fewer spectacular demos and more questions about tests, interfaces and ownership. But this is not the price of productivity. It is what stops a fast prototype becoming an expensive mystery later.
GitHub's review guidance emphasises small, focused changes, reviewer context and self-checking before a pull request. That is how a vibe-coding project matures: not by denying its experimental origin, but by turning its best idea into a series of small, explainable changes.
The exit test is not “it looks finished”
Before prototype code enters a maintained part of a product, it should pass a simple maturity test. A person can explain its purpose and main assumptions. A new teammate can find relevant rules and commands in the repository. Tests cover more than the demo case. Permissions, data access and external side effects are named. And there is a route back if the idea fails in practice.
This does not tame vibe coding until nothing useful remains. It preserves its best property: learning quickly. The only change is that a team consciously decides when it is still learning and when it is taking responsibility.
