What AWS AI actually includes
AWS AI brings together product families that should not be treated as interchangeable. AWS AI fits product and platform teams with existing AWS accounts, IAM roles, VPC conventions and logging practices. An internal knowledge system might retrieve documents from controlled storage, produce an answer with sources and route it through review. Keep agent write actions in draft mode first; consequential actions need approval outside the model output.
APIs, integration and operations
AWS SDKs, APIs and infrastructure tools can fit into existing applications and deployment pipelines. Bedrock offers invocation patterns including Invoke and Converse; Agents can use Knowledge Bases and defined action groups; SageMaker AI provides training jobs, pipelines and managed endpoints. Specialised services often work well as one well-defined API step without a custom model pipeline.
Keep model ID, prompt version, region, parameters, timeout and evaluation set configurable in the application. Similar APIs do not make models equivalent. Regional availability, modalities, context limits and tool-calling behaviour vary. Production also needs retries, quotas, cost alerts, tracing and a visible stop condition for agent loops.
Evaluation and quality control
A demo proves only that a path can run. A decision needs a fixed test set, expected outcomes and a comparison with the current process. For documents, check field accuracy and poor-scan handling; for speech, transcription errors and names; for generated answers, sources, hallucinations and escalation behaviour.
Repeat the evaluation after a model, prompt, data or region change. Log the inputs and outputs needed for review with appropriate masking. A Guardrail can filter content or detect sensitive information, but it does not replace human sampling, prompt-injection tests or checks for bad retrieval sources.
Security, data and governance
Use IAM and least privilege: an application should invoke only the models, storage and actions it needs. Review region, encryption, key management, network path, logging and deletion before sending personal or confidential data. For Knowledge Bases, source rights, refresh behaviour and document-level access must also line up.
AWS provides security and compliance capabilities, but the team still owns data classification. Confirm processing terms, retention, subprocessors and cross-border transfer with security, privacy and procurement. A model output is an answer to review, not evidence or automatic permission for a business action.
Pricing and ongoing cost
AWS AI is mostly usage-based, but the bill is not one AI price. Depending on the service, costs can include model or API calls, input and output volume, training, endpoint uptime, storage, Knowledge Base retrieval, Guardrails, evaluations, logs, networking and provisioned capacity.
